What is a domain name, how does it work and how to register a domain name?

domain names

Domain name is the address of your website that people type in the browser URL bar to visit your website. Just like a physical address helps people find a specific place, the purpose of a domain is to help visitors find a website.

How Domains Works

Your domain name points to the web server that hosts your site. Keep note that every domain is linked to an IP address. When a user enters a domain name into a browser, the server will search through a global server network that makes up the (DNS) Domain Name System.
Suppose your domain is pointed to our nameserver (ns1.hostersale.com & ns2.hostersale.com) and your website is hosted with us, so when someone visits your domain in browser they will see your website content. For a complete website domain name and web hosting both are required.

Types of Domain Names

Domain names are available in many extensions (Ltd’s). The most popular one is .com stands for commercial. There are many other options like .net, .org, .uk, .in, .us, .info, .xyz and many more.

Top Level Domain (TLD)

Top level domain or TLD are generic domain extensions that are listed at the highest level in the domain name system.

There are hundreds of TLDs, but the most popular ones are .com, .org, and .net. Other TLDs are lesser known.

Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD)

Country code top-level domain or ccTLD are country specific domain names which end with country code extension like .pk for Pakistan, .in for India, .us for the United States and many more.

They are used by websites that want to target audiences in a specific country.

Sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD)

Sponsored top-level domain or sTLD is a category of TLDs that has a sponsor representing a specific community served by the domain extension.

For example, .edu for education-related organizations, .gov for the government and more.

Subdomains

A subdomain is a separate division from a larger domain, but still shares the same servers. There is no need to purchase and register a subdomain. Technically, the WWW on most URLs is a subdomain that indicates a site is part of the World Wide Web.

The most common use for a subdomain is to organize and divide web content into separate sections. For example, we’re using clients.hostersale.com for user’s control panel area.

Who is Responsible for Domain Name System?

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) manages the domain names system. It is a non-profit organization that creates and implements the policies for domain names.
